Upgrade paths...
I posted it somewhere here but I think it deserves another thread. How about if you'd have, say 2 upgrades of every unit and could determine their upgrade paths?

It's that way in Disciples: Sacred Lands. You can purchase a unit with 0 XP in a town and it gains experience in battles. You get to choose their upgrade paths. You do it by choosing what buildings you build in your capitol.

Example:
Initiate from an Undead town. You build the Dark Temple and he advances to a Warlock at lvl2. Then you can build River Styx or Occult Temple. The first one upgrades your Warlock to a Wraith and the second to a Necromancer (at lvl3). The Wraith can't advance to lvl4 but a Necromancer can. The Crypt upgrades him to a Vampire and the Dark Tower transforms him into a Lich.

Okay, this idea fits under this header...
how about 'equipment changes'(?)...

what I mean, is *not* an upgrade, but simply a lateral shift...

for example, take the cyclops...
currently, they hurl a boulder, but under this system, you could equip the stack with either a "small" boulder, or a large boulder...
the effect would be that the large boulder would do 50% more damage, but has 75% of the range(I hope you're following me...)

example 2...
elven archers: currently they shoot twice...
but the lateral shift could be, that they shoot 2 arrows at once and target 2 separate creatures...

following now?
I could go on...

Here we go again...
Here comes the whole Poisoned and Burning arrow discussion again.

And I don't think H4 should be more complicated, yes to more functions and features, and to deeper gameplay. But I wouldn't want it to be more 'complicated'.

And when was this?...
I never got in on it :ţ

It was on the community and old HoMM board...
If I find it somehwere on my HDD I'll post it here.

I like the equipment changes idea but what will you equip Griffins (for example) with? ;)

I didn't say *every* creature could change...
certainly some would be difficult to do, but I don;t think the change would make them any more or less useful, hence my term "lateral"...

I suppose, if I must answer you question, griffins could get a "dodge" ability, in which they ignore damage on the first hit(each round), *or* the retaliation thing...
maybe even *2* dodges for royal griffins(?) :ţ

the "dodge" in and of itself might make for an interesting special too...
but I don't really want to start a new thread for "creature abilities" unless other people have ideas too...

well...
before the release of H3, there was talk on how you'd be able to upgrade a Roc and I see no problem giving all creatures certain magic traits on the lateral upg.

Niether do I...
but I have htis hang up in the fact *I* need the shifts to be *logical*(even if I don't get it, at first...)

shall we try??(*evil :ţ*) hehe

crusaders could get "strikes twice" or a "guaranteed morale"...
Beltion
2000-07-24 15:24:39

The morale would be better...
more movement, so it would need lesser stats.

okay.

Zealot, either no melee penalty, or can cast bless.
DumB

Agreed, the crusader would sacrifice...
speed if you chose morale(down to 5?)

unicorns: either a chance to blind w/ attack, or the ability to teleport(at basic) in lou of attacking...
war unicorns gain the ability to teleport at expert(sacrificing a greater chance to blind, maybe even the movement bonus, or HP...)
Beltion

could do that...
but, unicorns teleporting?

That's what I'm used to from MOM...
they are said to be magical creatures...
maybe jsut an "invis" ability?(assuming we add it)

and war u's could attack w/o it wearing off(?)...

I might as well edit since the theread hasn't moved on...

vampire lords: no retal or ability to gain "back" *more* than the number they started w/(but only after they get attacked once, and not just retal, an actual attack...)[either that or "up to" a certain percentage of what they started w/...], possibly at the cost of those HP you were complaining about(?)...

And the Behemoth :) ...
could sacrifice, say 40% (or all) of the defence reducing ability to get 350 (or 400) HP.
Beltion

the invisibility sounds strong...
specially if it's permanent...

And as for the Behemoth, the def. reduction is it's special, so I don't like the idea of it being removed.
DumB

Two things...
the invisibility takes a turn to *cast*...
*and* it's dispelled if hit

the point was, that normal u's owuld have it dispelled if they attacked anything, while war u's don't(but it doesn't mean they can't be hit...)

and certain creatures could have "illusions immunity" which would allow you to see the the invisible unit during that creature's turn...

I like the behemoth idea, there's not much else that could be done...

I didn't mean to remove the ability...
just don't enhance it to 80% to get more HP's.

And I like the invisibility idea.

Dwarves, of course.
you stick a dwarf into their back.

Or you could choose to put a gobbo, gremlin, elf...

sounds complicated
mmmm complicated. I say screw all this simplification crap i keep hearing rumors about, i like a homm that requires a phd to play :P

I really don't know...
what 3DO is planning to do to simplificate HoMM4. I don't like it either, it *should* get more complicated.
DumB
2000-07-07 17:26:53

Oooo, neeat.....
It might be a little tricky for homm though, considering how they like to keep units separated by level...

what I mean to say, is that if skeletons can be upgraded to dread knights, it kinda defeats the purpose of having them in the first place...
